This twoday seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct the plan review process for waterbased fire protection systems.

Examining fire sprinkler shop drawings, cut sheets and hydraulic calculations is a primary duty of the authority having jurisdiction. This course will provide an efficient and thorough review of plans and other fire sprinkler documents. Attendees will learn what documents to accept to start a review, what steps to take through the fire sprinkler design and systems review, and how to have confidence while reviewing hydraulic calculations. This course applies current codes and standards to fire sprinkler systems from the initial site plan review, through the construction documents, to the as-built drawings. Students will receive a handout that provides detailed checklists with expert commentary that is useful to the fire sprinkler plan reviewer for years to come.

Attendees must bring a copy of NFPA 13 to class.

We are excited to announce our new monthly training seminars at NFSA Headquarters' training facility located in Maryland. These training classes have special pricing which includes lunch. You won't want to miss out on the opportunity to learn from industry experts on the topics that affect the fire sprinkler industry!

This one-day seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct the field inspections for new fire sprinkler and standpipe systems.

Fire sprinkler systems are installed in stages, and inspections are required before commencing to the next stage. The codes require periodic on-site inspections as the work progresses, to be installed according to the approved construction documents. This work must be inspected and approved before being covered or before the system is commissioned. This course points out the visual and physical inspection requirements of the latest codes and standards.

Attendees must bring a copy of NFPA 13 to class.

Total Instructional Time: 7 contact hours

Learning Outcomes:  At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the relationship various codes and standards have with the plan reviewer, field inspector and commissioner of the system.
  2. Compare the actual installation with the approved construction drawings for compliance with appropriate codes and standards.
  3. Explain the duties of the inspector during onsite inspections of the installed systems
  4. Employ contemporary techniques of field inspections.
  5. Understand the various stages involved in the installation of systems and the need to correlate and interact with contractors, other inspectors and the authorities having jurisdiction.

Celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with the Altoona Fire Department! This family-friendly event will allow visitors to tour fire trucks, tour the fire station and meet Altoona's firefighters, take part in emergency-themed learning stations, and more. Free food and drink will be provided, thanks to Altoona's Hy-Vee!

NFSA staff members will conduct a live-fire “side-by-side” demonstration at this open house.  There is no better way to witness the ravages of fire or the life- and property-saving benefits of a residential fire sprinkler system! Feel the heat, see how fast fire is, and witness how rapidly a fire is contained by the activation of a single fire sprinkler!  Two living rooms will be lit on fire and allowed to burn.  One living room is protected by a single fire sprinkler. You'll see just how fast smoke alarms and sprinkler operate to keep your family safe!  The other living room is unprotected, and you'll see how fast and deadly fire can be. The un-sprinklered room will be consumed in a "flashover" in less than 3 minutes, and we'll watch the fire department respond and extinguish what's left of the room.

As residential fire sprinkler systems become more widely recognized and adopted by communities it becomes more important than ever to understand the requirements for proper design and installation. NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Fire Sprinkler Systems in One‐ and Two‐Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes is the primary standard governing design and installation for residential sprinklers. Understanding the requirements of the standard and how they are applied is the key to a solid enforcement program. This one‐day course will guide the participant through the requirements of NFPA 13D and identify how the standard is applied as well as the alternative approaches, such as the International Residential Code (IRC) P2904. Participants are recommended to bring an NFPA 13D and the IRC to course.
