NFPA 13 includes a chapter called “Specially Occupancy Requirements”. In the 2019 edition this is chapter 26. This chapter basically extracts fire sprinkler requirements from other NFPA standards for specific situations. For example, in facilities where there is a paint spray booth, there is a section that extracts applicable sprinkler requirements from NFPA 33, Standard for Spray Application Using Flammable or Combustible Materials. If your project includes a hypobaric chamber, Chapter 26 includes some important extracts from NFPA 99B, Standard for Hypobaric Facilities. The list goes on and Chapter 26 includes requirements from 36 separate NFPA standards.

As part of the 2018 NFPA code cycle, two documents are changing in ways that will impact the way you do business. First, NFPA 3, Recommended Practice for Commissioning of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems will become a standard. Both NFPA 3 and NFPA 4, Standard for Integrated Fire Protection and Life Safety System Testing are being incorporated through reference into the International Building Code, NPFA 101, Life Safety Code and NFPA 5000, the Building Construction and Safety Code. Designing and installing sprinkler systems requires review and compliance with both the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA installation standards.  We will review the sprinkler, fire department connection, and fire pump installation requirements located in chapter 9 of the 2021 edition of the IBC and compare them to the requirements found in the applicable NFPA installation standards including 13, 14, and 20.  It is important to understand the regulatory matrix and hierarchy of codes and standards when evaluating additional and/or conflicting installation requirements.  There are differences between the building code and installation standard requirements that must be understood to ensure compliance with both documents.    

This seminar is important for the fire sprinkler industry, architectural community, and for code officials as they all play a role in compliance and enforcement.  The assumption is that the participant will already have a basic understanding of building codes and NFPA installation standards.

Information on insulation practices for sprinkler system installations is very limited in the three NFPA sprinkler standards (13, 13R, and 13D). This Tech Tuesday will review the content of a white paper under development by the NFSA’s Insulation Task Group, which has representatives of the sprinkler industry as well as the insulation industry. Specifically, the different types and methods of insulation used, design criteria developed through mathematical models and historical data will be explained. Common shortfalls encountered during installation along with common failures will be illustrated, along with possible recommendations on how to avoid them. In addition, alternative methods, such as use of antifreeze, dry pipe sprinkler systems, heat tracing, or combinations of options will be highlighted.

The storage of Group A plastic on racks is one of the most challenging fire situations that fire sprinklers can experience. These storage arrangements can promote a severe fire condition which may include a rapid spread of fire with a high rate of heat release. Chapter 17 in NFPA 13 titled “Protection of Rack Storage of Plastic and Rubber Commodities” spells out the acceptable protection options for this extreme fire risk. Chapter 17 gives the layout technician many options including the use of Standard Spray Sprinklers (CMDA), Control Mode Specific Application sprinklers (CMSA), Early Suppression Fast Response sprinklers (ESFR) and in-rack sprinklers.

There have been many recent large wood frame building fires in buildings under construction. In response, NFPA provided a research report in 2020 on the topic and changed NFPA 241 from a 6-year to a 3-year cycle. The NFSA Engineering & Standards committee worked directly with the NFPA 241 committee on many revisions for the 2022 edition to address the concerns of the sprinkler industry, and this webinar will explore all of the updates to appear in the 2022 edition, being released in the fall 2021. Participants should enter with a basic understanding of building codes and NFPA installation standards

The next edition of NFPA 13 includes a complete reorganization of the document intended to provide a better roadmap for designers and reviewers. This was the most significant change to NFPA 13 since the 1999 edition when criteria for the Protection of Storage Commodities was added from the NFPA 231 series of documents and its restructuring in the 2002 edition. This presentation will discuss the reasons why the changes were made, the new layout of the standard and where information can be found. Chapter 8, the “junk drawer” or catch-all chapter has been blown up with information being distributed throughout the document. The approach for storage has been redefined based on sprinkler type rather than by commodity classification. These topics and others of significance will be discussed during this presentation.

George Stanley of Wiginton Fire Protection and NFSA’s Engineering and Standards Committee Chairman, with Roland Asp, NFSA’s Manager of Codes and Standards, will detail and explain the proposed changes to the 2022 Edition of NFPA 13 including installation, discharge, residential, and hanging & bracing requirements.

Situations involving vertical openings for escalators, staircases and atriums will be reviewed. Sprinkler protection requirements for elevator equipment rooms and shafts will be identified. These requirements have evolved over the last several cycles and reviewed to demonstrate when sprinkler protection is required and when it can be omitted.

Typically, the requirements of NFPA 13 for the protection of storage are distinct from the occupancy or hazard class requirements of the standard. Miscellaneous and low-piled storage is the exception. These specific storage arrangements are protected by the rules found in Chapter 13, which typically reference the occupancy rules and not the storage rules within NFPA 13. This program will show how the provisions of this chapter combine with both the occupancy hazard classification rules and the rules for protection of high-piled storage involving commodity classification. Hydraulic calculations determine the most important aspect of the fire protection system being designed; will the system, as designed and given the available water supply, be able to provide enough water at the required density to successfully control or suppress a fire. Today, most of us use computer-based software programs to aid us in performing these calculations. These capable and powerful programs streamline the hydraulic calculation process by taking our input information and running the calculations for us. As long as the correct information is inputted into the program, an accurate calculation can be produced in a fraction of the time of a manual or “old fashioned” hydraulic calculation. The advent of these calculation programs has been an enormous benefit to the layout technician, but if the technician does not understand the formulas and procedures behind the calculation process, an important skill set can be lost. The knowledge gained by understanding and practicing the manual hydraulic calculation methods will reinforce the basic concepts of hydraulics and the interdependency of the various aspects of the layout. This understanding of the concepts of hydraulic calculations will help the technician to develop the “feel” for the fire sprinkler system that cannot be learned through merely inputting data into a computer

Large construction fires are occurring across the US. These fires tax the response and resources of local communities, drive up construction costs, and have long lasting effects on the impact of construction. Fire sprinkler contractors and fire sprinkler installation standards are stuck in the middle. The American Wood Council presents on the causes and concerns of the wood industry of these fires and the work being done in model building and fire codes to improve and reduce construction fires. The Cambridge (Massachusetts) Fire Department presents past history and current practices by AHJs to prevent these types of fires. Top Tech Competition 2025 - Online Exam Registration 
 
The Top Tech Competition is a three-step process.  First, participants will begin with an online examination.  The highest scorers on the online exam will be invited to Nashville for the next level of competition. Participants will then be given a written test onsite in Nashville to determine the top 18 participants.  The top 18 will move the final round which will be an elimination tournament in a game show format.  The winner will be given the title of NFSA’s 2025 Top Tech!
 

The exam will be an open-book test based on the 2025 editions of NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, NFPA 13D, NFPA 20, the 2024 edition of NFPA 14 and 2023 edition of NFPA 22. The participant will have 60 minutes to finish 25 multiple choice questions on lay out, detail and hydraulic calculation of fire sprinkler systems and pumps. It is expected that all hydraulics questions will be done by hand with a calculator, not with a computer program. The layout portion of the exam will need to be downloaded, completed, and scanned into a PDF file and uploaded to the NFSA server within 90 minutes. Any late transmission will not be accepted, regardless of how close to the time limit the response is received by the NFSA. Computer problems are not unusual, so the participant is encouraged to leave ample time for dealing with scanning and sending issues.  

 

The exam will only be available from noon on December 16, 2024 to January 31, 2025 at noon (all times Eastern Standard Time, EST). All responses must be received by noon on January 31, 2025 in order to be considered.  Please note: there is a 24 hour processing period to access the test upon registering.  Registrations will be taken no later than January 30, 2025.
