Criteria ensuring the two fire protection systems work together will be addresses, along with potential issues inspectors should look for while conducting final inspections. Compliant vs noncompliant methods for transmitting the fire alarm (and waterflow) signals from the protected premises to the supervising station will also be discussed.

This two‐day seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct the plan review process for water‐based fire protection systems.

Examining fire sprinkler shop drawings, cut sheets and hydraulic calculations is a primary duty of the authority having jurisdiction. This course will provide an efficient and thorough review of plans and other fire sprinkler documents. Attendees will learn what documents to accept to start a review, what steps to take through the fire sprinkler design and systems review, and how to have confidence while reviewing hydraulic calculations. This course applies current codes and standards to fire sprinkler systems from the initial site plan review, through the construction documents, to the as-built drawings. Students will receive a handout that provides detailed checklists with expert commentary that is useful to the fire sprinkler plan reviewer for years to come.

Attendees must bring a copy of NFPA 13 to class.

Fire sprinkler systems are installed in stages, and inspections are required before commencing to the next stage. The codes require periodic on-site inspections as the work progresses, to be installed according to the approved construction documents. This work must be inspected and approved before being covered or before the system is commissioned. This course points out the visual and physical inspection requirements of the latest codes and standards. 

Attendees must bring a copy of NFPA 13 to class.  

Total Instructional Time: 7 contact hours 

Learning Outcomes:  At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to: 

1. Discuss the relationship various codes and standards have with the plan reviewer, field inspector and commissioner of the system. 
2. Compare the actual installation with the approved construction drawings for compliance with appropriate codes and standards. 
3. Explain the duties of the inspector during onsite inspections of the installed systems 
4. Employ contemporary techniques of field inspections. 
5. Understand the various stages involved in the installation of systems and the need to correlate and interact with contractors, other inspectors and the authorities having jurisdiction.

Dealing with obstructions to fire sprinklers is a basic and vital skill needed by a successful layout technician. The varied real word obstructions encountered can at times be challenging to handle and ascertain the correct NFPA 13 obstruction rule to apply. For this reason, obstructions are consisting one of the top questions entered NFSA’s Expert of the day program. This presentation will take the mystery out of obstructions and will review the “obstruction rules” of NFPA 13 and is a “must-know” for layout technicians, installers, AHJs and others in the industry.

They need to be spaced properly and installed in specific locations to ensure coverage of the protected area and located far enough away from obstructions to ensure that the spray pattern can adequately develop and control or suppress a fire. This fast paced and interactive seminar will guide the participant through series of decisions and requirements that lead to compliance with NFPA 13 and ensure the system will operate properly when needed.

1. Discuss the different types of standpipe systems

3. Recognize the differences between horizontal standpipes and lateral runs of pipe to standpipe outlets.
