For the past 36 years, Burn Center Golf Invitational golfers have swung their clubs to support an important cause -- helping people who have suffered burn injuries. All proceeds from the day benefit Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Regional Burn Center and the Fire Fighter's Foundation's Summer Camp for Burn Injured Youth.

Tech Tuesday Description: As residential fire sprinkler systems become more widely recognized and adopted by communities, it becomes more important than ever to understand the requirements of proper design and installation. More than the commercial market, the residential environment is subject on the job changes and less engineering oversight and as a result the residential sprinkler system installer must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of residential sprinkler systems. A solid understanding of the requirements of the installation standards and how they are applied is the key to a successful installation. This class will guide the participant through the requirements of NFPA 13D as well as the alternate approaches.

Explore design requirements for Lithium-ion based Batteries, including Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and Electric Vehicles. This program reviews the sprinkler design requirements located in NFPA 855 Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems, as well as the impact electric vehicles may have on sprinkler design going forward. It also covers the environmental impacts of a Lithium-ion battery fire.

1. Evaluate the unique hazard introduced by Lithium-ion battery thermal runaway.   

2. Understand the process of determining proper sprinkler design criteria for Stationary Energy Storage Systems. 

3. Understand how to communicate with project teams on the impact the sprinkler design will have on ESS. 

4. Evaluate the environmental impact of a Lithium-ion battery fire and how to assist first responders in establishing emergency response plans.

This course offers fire departments an overview of NFPA 13-E through classroom presentations, case studies, and hands-on scenarios using an NFSA fire sprinkler valve trailer. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to develop operational guidelines for firefighting in properties equipped with sprinkler and standpipe systems.

Governor's Fire Prevention Day is committed to educating and engaging Minnesota State Fair goers through engaging and hands-on opportunities focused on home fire prevention and safety.  The event is billed as the World's Largest Fire Prevention Event.  Fire apparatus, live-fire demonstrations, hands-on demonstrations and games are presented by more than two dozen fire safety organizations.  NFSA members will be staffing an information and demonstration booth “in the Hot Zone” at the north end of Machinery Hill on Underwood Street.  See the Minnesota Chapter's new “Valve Trailer” and witness the fast suppression of a fire by a residential sprinkler.  Live-fire demonstrations will be conducted throughout the day, and the informational and promotional booth will be in operational from 8 AM to 6 PM.  You are sure to learn something new to keep you and your loved ones safer this year while enjoying "The Great Minnesota Get-Together!”

Since 1997, a group of volunteers from the MN Chapter of the National Fire Sprinkler Association has been working hand-in-hand with the MN State Fire Marshal’s office and Regions Hospital to host a golf event to raise money to benefit the Regions Hospital Burn Center.  In 2018, the Burn Aid Foundation officially became a 501(c)(3) charity and we continue to operate solely as volunteers from these same three great organizations. Our annual Golf Outing is a great opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled day of golf, networking, and friendly competition. We hope you can make it!

Description: Wildfire is no longer an occasional threat- it’s a constant one. Recent fires in Los Angeles served as a real-world test of exterior wildfire defense systems, offering important lessons about what worked, what didn’t and why. This session will share key takeaways from homes protected by Frontline, including system successes, challenges and why some properties were lost. We’ll also cover how wildfire spreads in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), the role of passive vs. active mitigation strategies and how exterior sprinkler systems are emerging as a critical piece of the puzzle. For fire sprinkler contractors, this represents a growing opportunity to expand into exterior wildfire protection- a natural extension of their existing expertise and a way to meet increasing demand in high-risk regions.

Description: This course will provide attendees with the criteria from the International Fire Code and NFPA 13 related to commodity classifications for high-piled storage occupancies. Identified differences and how to address these differences between the IFC and NFPA 13 will also be discussed. Examples of Class I – IV and Group A plastics will be provided.

There are hundreds of types of sprinklers in use today. Determining where to locate them can be a complex task. They need to be spaced properly and installed in specific locations to ensure coverage of the protected area and located far enough away from obstructions to ensure that the spray pattern can adequately develop and control or suppress a fire. This fast paced and interactive seminar will guide the participant through series of decisions and requirements that lead to compliance with NFPA 13 and ensure the system will operate properly when needed.  

Attendees should bring a copy of the NFPA 13 with them. 

Learning Outcomes:  At the conclusion of this seminar the participant will be able to: 

1. Discuss how the Occupancy Classification drives sprinkler system installation requirements. 
2. Describe the process for selecting sprinklers for installation. 
3. Discuss the effects of obstructions to sprinkler spray and how to avoid them.

5. Identify the locations where sprinklers can be omitted

The NFSA UL/FM and ISO/USTAG committees represent the interests of our sprinkler manufacturers and equipment suppliers relative to product testing and standards.  This includes coordination with Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), and International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These product standards provide the minimum testing requirements for products to be listed or approved for installation in fire sprinkler systems.

Description: It’s been over 10 years since NFPA 13 prohibited the use of nonlisted antifreeze in new systems, three years since the launch of the first UL listed antifreeze, and mere months since NFPA 25’s sunset date for nonlisted antifreezes. But in between all of that, several more listed antifreezes have become available to the market and new editions of NFPA Standards have been published, some of which included changes related to antifreeze system requirements. This webinar will review the key items fire protection industry professionals should understand about ensuring safe and compliant antifreeze systems. We’ll cover topics such as UL 2901, NFPA requirements for new and existing antifreeze systems, ITM of listed antifreeze systems, and more.

This highly interactive full day seminar describes the requirements for properly maintaining a water‐based fire protection system in accordance with NFPA 25. The seminar clearly describes the responsibilities for compliance and record keeping. It describes the specific scope of the standard and identifies the various ways in which information related to changes in the system is handled. It describes the various tables used in the standard, their specific purposes, and when to use which tables. It involves the attendees in many exercises describing problems encountered, identifying the appropriate section(s) of the standard and how to deal with issues not covered by the standard that may still be encountered.

Learning Outcomes:  At the conclusion of this seminar the participant will be able to: 

1. Explain the areas to which the standard applies and does not apply, how those areas are addressed. 
2. Explain the general definitions used in the standard that are common to all NFPA documents and those specific to the standard and their meaning. 
3. Discuss the various Tables utilized throughout the standard and explain their respective purposes. 
4. Apply the various Tables in the standard to the appropriate situation. 
5. Discuss and demonstrate the various means by which information is provided to the owner, and the reasons for different methods. 
6. Explain the difference between using an NFPA inspection report and an informational report. 
7. Describe potential ways of impairing and restoring a system 
8. Describe how to properly report situations not within the scope of NFPA 25.

Tech Tuesday Description: This course will provide attendees with information specific to the hydraulic calculation of fire sprinkler systems. Depending on the type of system, water supply, AHJ, or insurance carrier the parameters, variables and equations can very, and understanding those situations is important even when using computers for the calculations. Understanding how to troubleshoot calculations, when to use the Hazen-Williams vs the Darcy-Weisbach formula, or something as simple making the right choice in materials to be installed is a crucial part of fire sprinkler design that cannot always be replicated using a computer programs.

Description: NFSA's Supplier and Manufacturer's (SAM) Council is actively seeking projects to fund through their newly established Grant Program. During this session, the Chair and Vice Chair of SAM Council will explain how the Program aims to monetarily support projects that align with NFSA's goals: increasing protection of lives, enhancing service to NFSA members and its affiliates, providing industry training and education, facilitating the efficient use of resources, and recruiting and outreach. They'll also review eligibility criteria and how to apply to be considered for the Grant. 

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about the Program.

Live Fire Sprinkler Demonstration at 1:30 PM!

We are excited to announce our new monthly training seminars at NFSA Headquarters' training facility located in Maryland. These training classes have special pricing which includes lunch. You won't want to miss out on the opportunity to learn from industry experts on the topics that affect the fire sprinkler industry!

This one-day program provides the participant with the requirements for design, layout, installation, and acceptance testing of standpipe systems using NFPA 14. Through discussion and activities, the seminar will address topics such as system pressures, the challenges of tall buildings, requirements for horizontal standpipes and the acceptance requirements for standpipe systems. 

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this seminar the participant will be able to: 

1. Discuss the different types of standpipe systems 
2. Identify standpipe system components and hardware 
3. Recognize the differences between horizontal standpipes and lateral runs of pipe to standpipe outlets. 
4. Discuss the rules of NFPA 14 that are specific to high-rise buildings 
5. Determine the net result of the NFPA 14 and NFPA 20 rules 
6. Select fire pumps to match the flow and pressure demand requirements of a standpipe system without over pressurizing portions of the system. 
7. Calculate the effect of elevation head in tall buildings. 
8. Recognize manual standpipe systems and where these standpipe systems are installed. 
9. Identify the tests and documents required for a standpipe system to be accepted

Tech Tuesday Description: Ensuring that sprinklers are positioned and located for successful activation and operation is important for system performance. This session will detail important aspects of sprinkler location and position, with a review of existing rules as well as an update to new changes to the 2025 edition of NFPA 13

The “Big Box” store has gotten bigger. There was a time, not too long ago, when we considered a 150,000 sq ft Wal-Mart Supercenter to be a big commercial building. Today, the size occupancy pales in comparison to the mammoth fulfillment centers that exist all over the country. Sizes range from the paltry 600,000 sq ft to well over 1,000,000 sq ft and they just keep getting bigger.

Join us for a two-day Big Box Workshop where we take an in depth look at the proliferation of these new buildings and examine their impact on the fire service. There will be lively discussions from those with experience along with an opportunity to put the ideas into actions during a stirring round of big box simulations.
