Lithium-Ion Batteries uses and applications are growing, and each application creates unique hazards. A Li-ion battery used in a cell phone creates a different hazard than a Li-ion battery used in an energy storage system. Depending on how a battery is being used or stored will impact the level of risk, the type of hazard and the applicable codes or standards to be applied. This course will discuss Li-Ion battery applications including, BESS, Bulk Storage, Mobile electronics, and Electric vehicles and identify the key hazard for each and mitigation methods to reduce risk.

Fire Sprinkler System Installation Requirements (INS):

$350 Non-Member or $175 Member

There are hundreds of types of sprinklers in use today. Determining where to locate them can be a complex task. They need to be spaced properly and installed in specific locations to ensure coverage of the protected area and located far enough away from obstructions to ensure that the spray pattern can adequately develop and control or suppress a fire. The rules that govern this complex matrix of decisions are found in Chapter 8 (2016) Chapter 9 (2019-2022) of NFPA 13 on installation requirements. This fast paced and interactive course will guide the participant through series of decisions and requirements that lead to compliance with NFPA 13 and ensure the system will operate properly when needed.

Attendees must bring a copy of NFPA 13 to class or have access to the standard online.

This two-course series is designed for anyone new to the fire protection industry, or anyone who is simply trying to learn more and advance their career, such as designers, estimators, and sales professionals. Purchased as a single transaction, students are enrolled in Layout Technician: Fundamentals, a series of self-paced On Demand Training modules and an upcoming instructor-led Layout Technician: Application course.

Students with basic knowledge of math, physical science, and drafting skills will learn basic sprinkler layout and detailing technician skills. All of the work elements necessary for NICET Level II Certification will be covered by the course including sprinkler selection, sprinkler spacing and location, obstructions to sprinklers, water supplies (public mains, tanks, and pumps), hydraulic calculation of sprinkler systems, and standpipe system layout, and calculation.

Layout Technician: Fundamentals (LTF) – A series of On Demand Training modules with instructor office hours, intervention, and support.

  • These modules focus on the various core concepts necessary to understand and function as a Layout Technician in the 21st century. Learners explore content as simple as parts of a sprinkler using advanced 3D technology, up through and including carefully instructed hydraulic calculations – all while developing the soft skills necessary to overcome design challenges with the codes and standards in hand.
  • The Layout Technician: Fundamentals course is available to enrolled students about 8 weeks in advance of the Layout Technician: Application course.
  • Successful completion of Layout Technician: Fundamentals is a prerequisite to attending the Layout Technician: Application course.

Layout Technician: Application (LTA) - The instructor-led course is offered at locations across the US, with virtual options available. The choice is entirely yours!

  • A 3-day instructor-led course that applies the content learned in the Layout Technician: Fundamentals course. Using project-based learning, students apply their knowledge of fire sprinkler layout concepts to a legitimate plan, learning through problem solving, research, and simply doing.

Model codes and standards are often motivated to change after large fires with large losses of life and injuries. These changes often make an impact to the fire sprinkler industry. Fires such as the MGM Grand Hotel, Our Lady of the Angels, the Iroquois Theater, and other recent fires, such as the Station Nightclub and Grenfell Tower fires make impacts to the industry. This course will detail several large fires and their influence on the industry and their results in the codes and standards being applied today. This course will benefit designers, layout technicians, contractors, as well as code officials to understand this important fire sprinkler history.

“Keep the home fires burning” was a motto to encourage soldiers and their families during World War I. Today it would have a totally different meaning. Fires in residential occupancies are by far the most common type of fire and kill more people each year than all other fires combined. Residential occupancies include homes, duplexes, townhomes, and apartments. Residential sprinkler technology emerged in the 1970s and early 1980s in response to the U.S. government’s report called “America Burning” that encouraged the development of a quicker-activating sprinkler that could provide life safety benefits in addition to property protection. This seminar will review the history of residential sprinkler technology, identify the differences between commercial and residential sprinklers, and evaluate sprinkler performance in residential settings.

It can be challenging when designing modifications to existing sprinkler systems when buildings are renovated, change use, or receive an addition.  Designers need to first understand the proposed building modifications. Such information can usually be found in the architect’s proposed floor and reflected ceiling plans.  Then they have to determine the layout and design criteria of the existing sprinkler system.  This information is often unavailable, hard to find, or requires a complete survey of the existing system.  They must also review the codes and standards to determine the applicable requirements when working in an existing building.  Finally, they must design and layout the new and/or modifications to existing systems.
