The 65th Annual North Carolina Fire Prevention School will be held March 16 - 20, 2026 at the Courtyard by Marriott, Carolina Beach. The Fire Prevention School’s philosophy has always been to offer competency-based instruction, whereby, the student is exposed to a broad base of material going beyond the requirements of the fire code. With this in mind, students should not be subjected to a duplication of the certification classes but will receive more in-depth study on related topics.

This two-course series is designed for anyone new to the fire protection industry, or anyone who is simply trying to learn more and advance their career, such as designers, estimators, and sales professionals. Purchased as a single transaction, students are enrolled in Layout Technician: Fundamentals, a series of self-paced On Demand Training modules and an upcoming instructor-led Layout Technician: Application course.

Students with basic knowledge of math, physical science, and drafting skills will learn basic sprinkler layout and detailing technician skills. All of the work elements necessary for NICET Level II Certification will be covered by the course including sprinkler selection, sprinkler spacing and location, obstructions to sprinklers, water supplies (public mains, tanks, and pumps), hydraulic calculation of sprinkler systems, and standpipe system layout, and calculation.

Layout Technician: Fundamentals (LTF) – A series of On Demand Training modules with instructor office hours, intervention, and support.

  • These modules focus on the various core concepts necessary to understand and function as a Layout Technician in the 21st century. Learners explore content as simple as parts of a sprinkler using advanced 3D technology, up through and including carefully instructed hydraulic calculations – all while developing the soft skills necessary to overcome design challenges with the codes and standards in hand.
  • The Layout Technician: Fundamentals course is available to enrolled students about 8 weeks in advance of the Layout Technician: Application course.
  • Successful completion of Layout Technician: Fundamentals is a prerequisite to attending the Layout Technician: Application course.

Layout Technician: Application (LTA) - The instructor-led course is offered at locations across the US, with virtual options available. The choice is entirely yours!

Join us at the Bolton Street Tavern in Marlboro for dinner, networking, and Terry Victor's presentation on "NFPA 25 Inspection Reports - Questions to Include and Questions to Avoid".

Presentation Description: NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems requires many inspection and testing activities that building owners often hire sprinkler contractors to perform. The inspection reports that contractors use include home grown versions using excel spreadsheets, to off the shelf prepopulated programs. There is little consistency between the various reports being used, except almost all of them include questions that can expose the contractor to unnecessary liability when something goes wrong. Many of the reports also omit needed details to make sure the inspector is looking for the details that NFPA 25 requires. This presentation will describe both the questions a contractor should include in their reports, as well as questions that should be avoided, and the reasons why.

This year's Seminar and Trade Show will be focusing on fire protection topics involving data centers.

Data centers strain emergency services by increasing the risk and complexity of fires, impeding access to facilities, and consuming significant resources such as water and electricity. The theme of the seminar is to provide information from technical experts to address the challenges in designing, constructing, and maintaining data centers in urban and rural population centers. We aim to introduce new technologies to aid emergency efforts during large-scale fire disasters and provide responders with examples of data center fires and how these challenges were met.

Layout Technician: Application

Training/Education
8/31/2026 1:00 PM
9/3/2026 5:00 PM
South Metro Fire Rescue Authority Headquarters
Centennial, CO
80112
9195 E Mineral Avenue

  • A 3.5-day instructor-led course that applies the content learned in the Layout Technician: Fundamentals course. Using project-based learning, students apply their knowledge of fire sprinkler layout concepts to a legitimate plan, learning through problem solving, research, and simply doing.

Registration closes 4 weeks prior to the start of the in-person session

Seminar Description: NFPA 13R offers cost-saving options for low-rise residential occupancies, such as the allowable omission of protection in attics and combustible concealed spaces. However, stakeholders must understand how the International Building Code (IBC) may limit or even prohibit the use of NFPA 13R. This session will discuss key differences between NFPA 13 and 13R and will examine critical scenarios where the building design might limit the use of 13R, including height threshold changes in recent editions of the IBC, sleeping unit separations, and mixed-use occupancy requirements. Finally, attendees will learn why NFPA 13 and NFPA 13R system selection is the responsibility of the Registered Design Professional.
