Advanced Hydraulics

This program covers a number of advanced topics in the hydraulic calculation of sprinkler systems including the determination of discharge criteria (flow from each sprinkler, number of sprinklers in the design area, and location of sprinklers in the design area) for complicated spaces and non-uniform spacing of sprinklers.  The program will also cover the methods of performing velocity pressure calculations and Hardy Cross loop analysis.  For those wanting to stay late, the Darcy-Weisbach friction loss calculation technique will be covered.

Due to the advanced nature of the program, it is recommended that only those already knowledgeable in basic hydraulic calculations (including use of the Hazen-Williams formula and adjustments for elevation) attend.  Anyone needing a refresher on these topics is encouraged to read Chapters 30 and 31 in the NFSA text, Layout, Detail and Calculation of Fire Sprinkler Systems, 2nd edition.  This program will be an excellent study session for those people seeking NICET Level III and Level IV certification.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Perform hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems where the sprinklers are not at uniform spacing.
  2. Perform hydraulic calculations in situations where there are two hazard classifications in the design area.
  3. Recognize when sprinklers in the design area are permitted to be considered closed (no flow is required from these sprinklers even if they are in the design area)
  4. Perform hydraulic calculations using the Velocity Pressure method.
  5. Calculate the flow of water around a loop or grid using Hardy Cross loop analysis.
  6. Use the Hazen-Williams formula to determine maximum available fire flow
  7. Use the Hazen-Williams formula to determine the c-factor of pipe
