Lithium Ion Battery Hazards (3HR)
---
LITHHAZ
Delivery: In-Person
Standard and editions: ; select edition:
Contact Hours: 3.00
Approvals: ICC#42043

This class will review the hazards related to Li-Ion Batteries and how the application or use of the batteries affect the hazard. Li-ion batteries pose a unique hazard that is drastically different than traditional fuels. Depending on how the batteries are used or stored the hazards related to Li-Ion differ. This course will discuss in detail the different types of batteries including construction and chemistry, the changes that occur depending on the application, and the current code requirements for Li-Ion Batteries in all applications.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify Li-Ion battery construction and types.

2. Review the different battery chemistries

3. Define thermal runaway

4. Review Hazards and code requirements based on the application

Water Mist Solution for 13D Applications (4HR)
---
WMIST4HR
Delivery: In-Person
Standard and editions: ; select edition:
Contact Hours: 4.00
Approvals: ICC #42541

This is a 4-hour classroom session and hands on demonstration. The purpose of this class is to educate fire code officials as well as the fire sprinkler contractor about NFPA approved water mist systems on how they work, installed, and maintained. We will teach how these type systems will directly suppress a fire by locating the hottest heat source and the highpressure water mist system will activate using 10x’s less water than traditional fire sprinkler systems. We will cover how these type systems can be applied in one and two family dwellings. Auto missed uses thermal sensing and an intelligent algorithm to detect a fire. It can operate much faster than a conventional fire sprinkler.

What the Contractor Should Know from the Fire Code Official
---
WCSK2HR
Delivery: In-Person
Standard and editions: ; select edition:
Contact Hours: 2.00
Approvals: ICC #42540

This is a 2-hour classroom session. This session's purpose is to have the fire sprinkler contractor understand where the code official is coming from by using ICC codes. There is a disconnect between fire sprinkler contractors and code officials. Contractors typically design and install fire sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA standards, they do not always understand the codes that code officials must enforce. At the end of this class, the fire sprinkler contractor will better understand the obligation that the code official must enforce fire codes and ensure that the system is also installed in accordance with NFPA standards.

This program covers a wide variety of topics all having to do with making decisions regarding the discharge criteria for sprinklers and nozzles (flow, pressure, number of sprinklers in the design area, location of sprinklers in the design area) for advanced and complex situations in fire sprinkler and water spray systems.

This course assumes that the participant knows and understands the meaning of basic hydraulic terms such as density and design area as well as knowing the Hazen-Williams formula for calculating friction loss.  Participants not familiar with these terms and formulas are certainly welcome to take the class, but they may find that they need to do more work to keep up.  Everyone that comes to the class should bring a calculator with a [yx] key that they know how to use.

This course is an excellent study session for people holding NICET Level II certification in Layout of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems who are preparing to sit for the Level III certification exams.  This program will cover information from NFPA 13, NFPA 15 and NFPA 16 (merged into NFPA 11).

This program covers a number of advanced topics over a three-day period including the spacing and location of storage sprinklers, hydraulic calculations (Darcy-Weisbach, Velocity Pressures, and Hardy Cross loop analysis), fire pump sizing (for situations with multiple pumps and situations with multiple water supplies), and a variety of other advanced installation issues. Due to the advanced nature of the program, it is an excellent study session for those people seeking NICET Level III and Level IV certification. The assumption is that the participant will already know how to use the Hazen-Williams friction loss equation.

NFPA 13 suggests adjusting water supply data used in sprinkler demand calculations as appropriate but making too large an adjustment can ultimately create just as many problems as making one that is too small.  This presentation summarizes some of the factors that should be considered for assessing adjustments as well as potential negative consequences of adjusting water supply data too aggressively.

Fixed Water Spray Systems is specialized water-based fire protection systems that is very different then the more familiar NFPA 13 type fire sprinkler systems. NFPA 15, The Standard for Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection, provides the minimum requirements for the design, installation and acceptance testing of this important tool in the active fire protection arsenal. Along with NFPA 25, this standard also outlines the ITM requirements of these systems.  NFPA 15 is not a new standard and was first adopted in 1940, however many of us in the industry do not have more than a cursory understanding of these systems.

Water-based fire protection systems need a reliable source of water. Stored water is a common and acceptable type of water supply for these systems. NFPA 22 is the Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection. This document describes the minimum requirements of the various types of tanks used for fire protection including gravity tanks, suction tanks, pressure tanks and break tanks. This seminar will highlight the requirements of this standard and will include valuable information on the various aspects of water tanks design and installation including: tank capacity, acceptable tank material, tank heating, pipe connections and fitting as well as acceptance test requirements and inspection testing and maintenance of water tanks.

There have been many recent large wood frame building fires in buildings under construction. In response, NFPA provided a research report in 2020 on the topic and changed NFPA 241 from a 6-year to a 3-year cycle. The NFSA Engineering & Standards committee worked directly with the NFPA 241 committee on many revisions for the 2022 edition to address the concerns of the sprinkler industry, and this webinar will explore all of the updates to appear in the 2022 edition, being released in the fall 2021. Participants should enter with a basic understanding of building codes and NFPA installation standards

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the common causes and loss history of construction fires.

  2. Understand the concerns for relative to temporary systems during construction.

  3. Interpret the new sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump requirements of the 2022 edition of NFPA 241.

  4. Identify how temporary sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pumps can be used during construction as outlined by the 2022 edition

If you purchase this class within 24 hours of the class start time, the class will not be available for the LIVE presentation. The recorded version will be available in your account following the processing period.

Water-based fire protection systems rely on a reliable source of water and the municipal water system is a common source of this water. The characteristics of a municipal water supply is typically determined through hydrant flow tests. NFPA 291, Recommended Practice for Fire Flow Testing and Marking of Hydrants, highlights the proper procedures, equipment and data collection for these vital tests. This seminar will highlight the requirements of this recommended practice and will include valuable information on the various aspects of hydrant flow testing including: Procedures, Test Layout, Equipment and Determination of Discharge as well as proper data collection and limitations of the tested data.
